Steel erection — Level 17 beam placement

Iron workers (Atlas Steel)

Task / scope

Erection of W18x40 beams and bracing on Level 17, including crane-assisted pick and bolt-up.

Site conditions

Active commercial site, adjacent to active concrete work on Level 14, public sidewalk below with covered walkway.

Hazards & controls

Falls from elevation (>6 ft)

High
  • 100% tie-off above 6 ft using approved harnesses and lanyards.
  • Perimeter cable installed before crew accesses floor.
  • Designated safety monitor on each level during erection.

Struck by suspended load

High
  • Tag lines on all picks. No personnel under suspended loads.
  • Designated landing zone marked and barricaded.
  • Spotter for each pick in radio contact with operator.

Caught between members during bolt-up

Medium
  • Use of connector clamps and approved bolt-up procedure.
  • Hands free of pinch points until member is set.

Adverse weather

Medium
  • Stop work if winds exceed 25 mph sustained at the working level.
  • Anemometer at crane operator station.

  • AWS D1.1 (where welding required)
  • Tower crane signal certification (signal persons only)

Energy isolation (LOTO)

N/A for erection scope. Power tools to be plugged into GFCI-protected circuits only.

Emergency procedure

In event of injury: stop work, secure load, call site safety supervisor (M. Reyes, ext. 102) and 911 if serious. Fall: do not rescue without proper equipment — call FDNY (rescue team familiar with site).
